My name is DJ Whit-It!
Nice! So please tell our readers where you are from and where you are currently based.
I'm from Marietta, Georgia and based in Atlanta.
So, how did you get your DJ name?
My really good friend came up with it for me!!
Unless you're like Paris Hilton, most DJs have humble beginnings in the industry. What was your very first gig as a DJ and how did it go?
My very first gig was actually at a restaurant/bar I used to host at called Hampton and Hudson. It went well, but was nerve wrecking because my boyfriend at the time was still slightly coaching me, and then he left mid-set. It also allowed me to rely on my own skill sets and judgement on the music selections. Turned out great!
Everyone has a different opinion... but what is your definition of a DJ?
My definition of a DJ is someone who can uplift the mood of any venue. Creating an awesome experience, and memorable time for everyone. No matter the age, sex, or race. Literally a VIBE CURATOR!
What do you wish more DJs would begin doing or do more of?
I wish more DJs would take the time to listen to and play different music. It gets a bit draining hearing the same songs playing from the radio, clubs, bars and parties. I want to be taken on a journey.
Do you have any pre-gig rituals or practices?
Definitely download at least 15-20 new songs before a gig. Do a quick 20 minute set at home to be more familiar with the newer downloads. Then really just let it flow and figure out where I want to take the crowd depending on reactions from what’s being played. I’ve never had a pre-planned set.
Any advice to give our DJ readers?
Don’t get distracted on what other DJs may have going on. Be inspired, but not distracted. Find your niche. Master it. Then find a way to grow your business, your name and your brand.
